Ben Kweller 6/27/09

ever see a performer, and within 60 seconds, you think: this person’s got it?.. after a sweltering 103 degree saturday in austin, Ben Kweller burst himself (at one point twirling) onto the stage at full force. with little prior knowledge of Ben’s music, i bought a ticket, despite the heat.
his skill as a melody/song-crafter was evident immediately, regardless of the musical coat the song was wearing. he and his band blended the pulse of honky-tonk, indie rock, and power pop rather masterfully all to the lyrical theme of love– whether the love be unrequited, fulfilled, or just plain confusing. according to his songs, Ben likes pretty girls and has a big heart. just as fun was the crowd’s response to every note– whether male or female, they knew every word and every beat. also impressive was Ben’s ability to put down his amped acoustic guitar and sit down at the keys. he knew how to blend boogie-woogie, soul, and blues (dare i mention a hint of Elton John?) to heartfelt original ballads.

halfway through the show, the bar’s employees were conscientiously chucking water bottles into the crowd. Ben thrashed and twanged, sang his heart out, and performed like a dynamo. … he’s got it. his steel guitar player came forward at times to remind us how very in Texas we all were.. the opening bands the Murdocks and Jones Street Station (complete with ripping harp player) were welcomed on stage for the encore. i hate to sell an artist as if he were a brand of toothpaste you should buy, but clearly, Ben Kweller will put a smile on your face and in your heart. he loved the crowd as much as they loved him. “i’m happy to be home” he emphasized– “we live in paradise.”
